Beijing slams unfair attacks against Chinese media on airship, Nord Stream & Ohio derailment reports
Bloomberg: Chinese diplomats, state media outlets and social media influences appear to be making efforts to exaggerate and misrepresent a chemical leak in the US and a report that the US military blew up the Nord Stream pipeline. All of this seems to be in response to questions about the balloon issue. How does the foreign ministry respond to that?
Wang Wenbin: When you said that China seems to be “exaggerating and misrepresenting” those events, it actually reflects the long-held bias among some media against China.
Immediately after the explosions of the Nord Stream pipelines, we saw extensive coverage in Western media with one-sided speculations on who was “responsible” for the sabotage. What we see now, however, is that these media, hailed as free, professional and impartial, have fa...

Beijing to reject 'current' TikTok deal: Chinese state media
CNBC's Eunice Yoon reports on how Chinese state media is saying Beijing will reject the "current " TikTok deal. For access to live and exclusive video from CNBC subscribe to CNBC PRO: https://cnb.cx/2NGeIvi
Following the weekend’s announcement that Oracle will take a 12.5% stake in TikTok and run cloud services and security for the app, President Donald Trump characterized the deal as a win for the U.S. by making TikTok a company that’s owned and controlled by Americans.
This is despite the fact that Chinese investors and companies will still own a large percentage of TikTok and have a say on the board of a newly created company based in the U.S. called TikTok Global.
Speaking on Fox News on Monday morning, Trump said the Chinese won’t have anything to do with TikTok after the deal goe...

Beijing 2022 'great opportunity' for media to expose 'tyranny and oppression'
Liberal MP Nicolle Flint says the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics is a great opportunity for media around the world to "shine the light" on China and showcase the realities that involve "tyranny and oppression" under a communist regime.
It comes following calls to boycott the Beijing Winter Olympics over reported human rights abuses in China.
"It's also a pretty good reminder how fabulous democracy is and the incredible freedom that we enjoy in countries like Australia," Ms Flint told Sky News host Paul Murray.

Public anger in China at dangerous levels of air pollution, which has blanketed Beijing in acrid smog, has spread as state media editorials questioned official transparency and the nation's robust development. State media on Monday joined internet users in calling for a re-evaluation of China's modernisation process, which has seen rapid urbanisation and economic development achieved at the expense of the environment. Al Jazeera's Steve Chao reports from Hong Kong
At Al Jazeera English, we focus on people and events that affect people's lives. We bring topics to light that often go under-reported, listening to all sides of the story and giving a 'voice to the voiceless.'

What we see now, however, is that these media, hailed as free, professional and impartial, have fallen silent over Seymour Hersh’s investigative report. Doesn’t this call for concern and reflection?
Since the train derailment caused the chemical leak in the US, many American people have questioned the US government and media for downplaying the accident. At public events, US officials described the balloon as a challenge to the US, yet said nothing about this serious chemical leak accident. On social media, many Americans are asking the US government: what is it hiding?
People have sharp eyes. They have already seen through the US government’s calculations in overreacting to and dramatizing the unexpected incident of the civilian airship. They are fully aware who exactly is trying to deflect public attention.

Speaking on Fox News on Monday morning, Trump said the Chinese won’t have anything to do with TikTok after the deal goes through, and that Oracle and Walmart, which said over the weekend that it will take a 7.5% stake in TikTok, will have “total control” over TikTok.
Oracle’s Executive Vice President Ken Glueck released a statement to CNBC shortly after Trump’s remarks that said Americans will have a “majority” of control over TikTok Global. Glueck’s statement also said TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, will “have no ownership” over TikTok Global.
“Upon creation of TikTok Global, Oracle/Walmart will make their investment, and the TikTok Global shares will be distributed to their owners. Americans will be the majority and ByteDance will have no ownership in TikTok Global,” Glueck’s statement said.
Meanwhile, ByteDance said Monday it will own about an 80% stake in TikTok Global.
So what’s going on? And why is there so much disparity between what each side is saying?

Also on The Listening Post: The anchorman: In the United States, evening news anchors are an institution and they have outlasted the countless changes in the media ecosystem around them. The news networks pay them huge salaries to take on the role of being the face and brand of their journalism.
Their importance comes down to viewer ratings but in light of the scandal involving NBC's Brian Williams' mis-telling of an old Iraq war story, questions have been raised about the trust we invest in the anchor's seat. The Listening Post's Nic Muirhead reports.

A ferry capsizing on the Yangtze river in China, killing a reported 431 people, has become a case study in how Beijing manages the news media when disaster strikes.
Shortly after the news broke, journalists got their orders from Beijing, telling them not to travel to the scene, to base their coverage on official press releases and to rely on state-run news platforms for updates. The results were clear from the coverage - news outlets published the same photos, painted the same picture and stuck to the same script, reporting the story Beijing's way.
But controlling information in the digital age is far from easy, even in China.
Talking us through the methods and the limitations of China's media disaster management are: Jason Q. Ng, research fellow, The Citizen Lab; Sam Geall, editor, China Dialogue; Qiao Mu, associate professor, Beijing Foreign Studies University; and Li Hongwei, managing editor, The Global Times.

State media on Monday joined internet users in calling for a re-evaluation of China's modernisation process, which has seen rapid urbanisation and economic development achieved at the expense of the environment. Al Jazeera's Steve Chao reports from Hong Kong
