Beijing's media damage control - The Listening Post (Full)
A ferry capsizing on the Yangtze river in China, killing a reported 431 people, has become a case study in how Beijing manages the news media when disaster strikes.
Shortly after the news broke, journalists got their orders from Beijing, telling them not to travel to the scene, to base their coverage on official press releases and to rely on state-run news platforms for updates. The results were clear from the coverage - news outlets published the same photos, painted the same picture and stuck to the same script, reporting the story Beijing's way.
But controlling information in the digital age is far from easy, even in China.

The United States must be held accountable and give a responsible explanation to the world if it did attack the Nord Stream pipelines, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin at a press conference in Beijing on Tuesday.

Public anger in China at dangerous levels of air pollution, which has blanketed Beijing in acrid smog, has spread as state media editorials questioned official transparency and the nation's robust development. State media on Monday joined internet users in calling for a re-evaluation of China's modernisation process, which has seen rapid urbanisation and economic development achieved at the expense of the environment. Al Jazeera's Steve Chao reports from Hong Kong

Talking us through the methods and the limitations of China's media disaster management are: Jason Q. Ng, research fellow, The Citizen Lab; Sam Geall, editor, China Dialogue; Qiao Mu, associate professor, Beijing Foreign Studies University; and Li Hongwei, managing editor, The Global Times.
Also on The Listening Post: The anchorman: In the United States, evening news anchors are an institution and they have outlasted the countless changes in the media ecosystem around them. The news networks pay them huge salaries to take on the role of being the face and brand of their journalism.
Their importance comes down to viewer ratings but in light of the scandal involving NBC's Brian Williams' mis-telling of an old Iraq war story, questions have been raised about the trust we invest in the anchor's seat. The Listening Post's Nic Muirhead reports.

Beijing again demands answer from US on Nord Stream explosion, questions media choice on stories

The United States must be held accountable and give a responsible explanation to the world if it did attack the Nord Stream pipelines, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin at a press conference in Beijing on Tuesday.
In an article published by British newspaper The Times recently, Seymour Hersh, an American investigative journalist, exposed that the Nord Stream pipelines transporting gas from Russia to Europe were blown up secretly by US intelligence agencies and military personnel in September last year.
"The Nord Stream gas pipelines are vital transnational infrastructure. The explosions have had a serious impact on the global energy market and ecological environment. If the American investigative journalist Hersh is telling the truth and it was the US who attacked the pipelines, the act is clearly unacceptable and must be answered for. The US owes the world a responsible explanation," Wang said.
"What we want to ask is why those media outlets that have always been claiming themselves to be free, professional and fair have made few reports on the latest Nord Stream investigation and such a major incident as the train accident that caused chemical leak which is threatening American people's life and safety? As far as we know, it is not the first time that this has happened," Wang said.
The leaks of Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines happened on Sept 26 when a flurry of detonations triggered four gas leaks at four locations on the pipelines, sending gas spewing to the surface of the Baltic Sea.
